A Partnership for Energy Access

It is formed by three leading companies in the energy sector (Acciona.org, Iberdrola and Signify), the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation and the Centre for Innovation in Technology for Human Development of the Polytechnic University of Madrid (itdUPM), in collaboration with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The Shire Alliance drives energy solutions that improve services and quality of life for people in refugee camps, working in collaboration with partners and implementers in the refugee camps themselves, and with itdUPM as the facilitating entity, which is responsible for the coordination of the Alliance.

Alianza Shire and local partners: Transforming lives in Ethiopia

In the Ethiopia project, Alianza Shire is currently working in partnership with the Ethiopian NGO Save the Environment Ethiopia (SEE), the Refugees and Returnees Service (RRS) – the Ethiopian government agency responsible for refugee affairs – and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

After an initial pilot project benefiting more than 8,000 people in northern Ethiopia, the alliance was severely affected by the war (March 2021) in the Shire region.

Future Project

Alianza Shire is currently developing a new project in the Dollo Ado refugee camps in south-eastern Ethiopia, close to the borders of Somalia and Kenya.

It works to turn light sources into data points to connect more devices, places and people through light, helping to create a more connected, more productive and safer world.

In 2018, it invested approximately 4.5% of sales in R&D. Sales in green products at the end of this year were 79%. It aims to be carbon neutral by 2020.

Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID)

The main management body of Spanish Cooperation, AECID currently works in 30 countries through a network of Technical Cooperation Offices, Cultural Centres and Training Centres.

In Ethiopia, AECID has a Technical Cooperation Office in Addis Ababa, which has been in operation since 2007.

itdUPM

The Centre for Innovation in Technology for Human Development of the Polytechnic University of Madrid (itdUPM) is an open innovation platform that integrates researchers, professors and students to address development and sustainability challenges.

The itdUPM works in collaboration with companies, civil society organisations and public administration. Specifically, in the Shire Alliance it acts as a facilitator between all the partners involved.

United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR)

Since its inception, the Shire Alliance has worked closely with UNHCR, which is responsible for coordinating international action for the protection of refugees worldwide.

UNHCR’s objective is to safeguard the rights and welfare of refugees and to ensure that everyone can exercise their right to seek asylum.
